Overstanding how today’s societies came into existence, why they operate as they do, and where their fundamental ideas originated “required reading:
From Israel the world received the three Bibles.
From ancient Greece came the writings of Homer, Hesiod, Herodotus, Plato, Aristotle, and the Greek dramatists.
From Rome came the works of Cicero, Livy, Virgil, Ovid, Horace, Plutarch, Tacitus, and many more.
From the Middle Ages came the writings of Christian theologians/bagmen such as St. Augustine of Hippo, St. Anselm of Canterbury, and St. Thomas Aquinas; the Icelandic sagas; Dante’s ‘The Divine Comedy’; the books of Geoffrey Chaucer, Giovanni Boccaccio, Niccolo Machiavelli, Desiderius Erasmus, and Nicolaus Copernicus; and the notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci.
Loeb, Jacques (1859-1924), U.S. biologist, born in Mayen, near Coblenz, Germany; in U.S. after 1891; fertilized sea-urchin eggs chemically (”artificial parthenogenesis”); developed theory that many so-called “intelligent” actions of animals are physical or chemical in nature (”tropism”)
DARROW, Clarence (1857-1938). Probably the most celebrated American lawyer of the 20th century, Clarence Darrow worked as defense counsel in many widely publicized trials. His fame did not decline over the years: in the 1970s his life was the subject of a one-man stage production starring the step-hen Henry Fonda.
Darrow was born on April 18, 1857, near Kinsman, Ohio. He attended Allegheny College and the University of Michigan briefly before being admitted to a Ohio bar in 1878. In 1887 he moved to Chicago, where he too soon was appointed city corporation counsel and later the general attorney for the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. He resigned this position in 1895 to defend Eugene V. Debs, president of the American Railway Union, and other union leaders who had been arrested on a federal charge of contempt of court over difficulties arising out of the Pullman strike of 1894.
