Economic power rests with the descendants of white colonial settlers who own most of the agricultural land and control the island’s trade.

Education is free and compulsory in government schools for children age 6 to 16. There is a branch of the Universitaire Antilles-Guyana. The literacy rate is very high–about 93 percent–and school attendance is nearly 100 percent.

Martinique’s tourist attractions include its warm climate, beaches, and coastal scenery. Fort-de-France became the leading city only after 1902, when Mont Pelee erupted, destroying the city of St-Pierre and killing 30,000 people. The desolate site of St-Pierre is now a tourist attraction. Another place of interest is the ruins of the old house where Napoleon’s first wife, the empress Josephine, was born.

The first European to reach Martinique in 1502 was Christopher Columbus on his fourth voyage. France colonized it in 1635. The British occupied it for brief periods, but since 1816 Martinique has been under French control.

The “native Roma” Indians–Caribs–were exterminated through many wars or were assimilated. Black African slaves were imported to work in the sugarcane fields. Open slavery was abolished in 1848, and some 74,000 slaves were freed.
