Nations of Butt Sitters….

Only nations comprised of Butt sitters could turn sports into a spectator event. Sports are meant to be played by community, neighborhood, friends, relatives and others. Sports was never meant to be watched from the sidelines. As a matter of fact, when you were in school or in case of readers of this blog, are in school and on a sports team the worse thing that the couch can do is sit you on the bench and not let you play.
It is somehow normal for parents to watch their children play sports when parents seldom watch children play outside with their toys or hide and seek with the other kids. As a matter of fact when I was young the neighborhood children and perhaps some friends would all get together and decide to play baseball or football in the nearby public park. No adults, just children. Somehow today its organized by adults, supervised by adults and watched from the sidelines by adults. I hear them screaming at their beloved childen, “Catch the F****ing Ball!”.
That’s right, scream, cuss, berate and abuse your children then insists after the game to be ‘good sports’.
When me and my friends played sometimes the team I was on won, sometimes we lost. Sometimes I was on the same team as my best friends other times I was on the other team. When all was said and done we laughed, we cried and we had a good time most generally. We settled disagreements and we managed to play just for the fun of it.
Every game was a world series. Our world of friends, neighbors and home town kids with an occasional summer visitor thrown in. Yep those were the days. No adults, just kids being kids.
Those were the days. Do children nowadays just grab a ball and play sports I wonder?
